What is the security around the preschool?
All exterior doors remain locked during the school day. Security cameras are installed throughout the building, including the preschool hallway. Visitors must call the preschool to gain entry and will be admitted by a preschool staff member. All staff members have completed BCI and FBI fingerprint background checks and are fully approved by the State of Ohio to work at the preschool.
How is communication with parents/guardians?
Communication for our program is primarily conducted via email. The director sends a monthly newsletter to keep families informed about upcoming themes, activities, and learning goals. Teachers also share their monthly classroom calendars by email.
If a parent needs to reach their child’s teacher during classroom hours, they may call the preschool’s main phone number at 440-729-3522. Phone or in-person conferences can always be scheduled for more in-depth conversations.
How can parents get involved with the program?
At Community Preschool, we value and appreciate parent involvement! Each classroom has a liaison who helps plan three to four classroom celebrations throughout the school year. Parents are also invited to participate as “secret readers” in their child’s classroom.
Families may volunteer to assist with special events such as our annual Field Day in May, as well as enrichment programs including fire safety, dental health, and other special learning experiences. Parent volunteers play an important role in creating a fun, engaging, and supportive preschool community.
What is the curriculum for the program?
At Community Preschool, we believe that learning and play go hand in hand. Our program blends play-based learning with intentional, academic-focused instruction. Our staff recognizes the vital role of play in early childhood education and encourages active, hands-on play throughout much of the day.
This play-based approach is thoughtfully complemented by structured, teacher-led activities that build essential academic skills, including letter recognition and sounds, sight words, word formation, number recognition, graphing, and STEM exploration. In alignment with West Geauga Local Schools, Community Preschool has also implemented the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum to support the development of strong early literacy and phonemic awareness skills.
What is your approach to discipline and conflict resolution?
Conflicts between students and challenging behaviors are viewed as opportunities for learning and growth. Our goal is to support children as they navigate these situations and to provide them with the tools they need to understand their emotions, make positive choices, and grow socially.
Our staff understands that testing boundaries and experiencing peer conflict are normal parts of early childhood development. Teachers are trained to guide children through conflicts by discussing options, offering choices, and encouraging children to take an active role in problem-solving. We also focus on helping children recognize their feelings and develop self-regulation skills.
Parents will be kept informed if a behavior becomes a consistent pattern or if the nature of the behavior is concerning. Open communication is always encouraged, as we value parents as important partners in their child’s learning and development.
